1: Memory
The first modification that you have
to be done is the “memory”.
Although we know already that 256 MB
memory is more than enough memory for
Windows XP on a desktop computer for
regular use, but make sure to load your
server with enough memory to make network
file access as fast as possible for
better performance. At least 512 MB
memory is recommended in file servers
or installs 1 GB if the BIOS support
it.
2: Disk Storage
The second modification is “disk
storage”. It is recommended especially
on a file server to install multiple
disks. The first disk should be smaller
using just for operating system. A 13
GB disk is inexpensive and more than
big enough. Then, instead of one huge
80 GB disk, add disks in 30 GB increments.
Accessing files on multiple disks is
faster than accessing the same files
on one disk. The other advantage of
using small and inexpensive disks is
that they are less expensive to replace
if they fail.
3: Backup Method
In the last you modified the “backup
method”. You can use a tape drive
for backup. A decent tape drive can
be bought for a few hundred bucks.
These tapes can become expensive and
require too much labor If you create
and follow a reasonable backup strategy
by rotating tapes every week, You might
consider an online backup service. This
service backs up your important files
to its Internet-based service, and those
files are secure. The Internet has numerous
such services and they're reasonably
priced. Beats tape swapping.
4: Install Terminal Services
After perform all above modifications,
now you install “Terminal Services”
on the server and then connect to it
using the Remote Desktop Client. Do
not let configuring Terminal Services
on Windows 2000 Server intimidate you.
Use “Add or Remove” Program
to select the check box for administrative
mode, and then you are done.
At this time you have
built your computer as server, it time
to decide which operating system you
want to run on it. You already know
there are a few operating systems, which
you can use for this purpose. The best
suitable is the “Windows XP”
to be installing. Windows XP can use
it for a file server or a gateway. It
would not give you all the features
of a full-fledged server, but it is
far less expensive and easier to get
up and running if you have no experience.
If you follow above modifications and
tips, you make a desktop computer as
a server in less expensive.
