How to configure VPN on windows 2003 server

This article describes that how you can configure VPN in windows 2003 server. This Configuration contains at client side VPN configuration and server side configuration in a step by step process. A Virtual Private Network is a network that connects two private LANs, or a remote computer and a LAN, over the public network that maintains its privacy. A VPN combines the virtues of a dial-up connection to a dial-up server with the ease and flexibility of an Internet connection. A VPN in servers running Windows Server 2003 is made up of a VPN server.



How to Configure the VPN Server

Configure the remote access server as a router:

1. Click Start > point to Administrative Tools >click routing and remote Access.
2. Right-click the server name .click properties.
3. Click General Tab > click to select router under enable this computer.
4. Click LAN and demand-dial routing > click OK to close the properties dialog box.

How to Configure a VPN Connection from a Client Computer

To set up a client for virtual private network access, follow these steps on the client workstation:

1. Confirm that the connection to the Internet is correctly configured on the client computer.
2. Click start > click control panel .click network connections > press create a new connection under network tasks and then click next.
3. Click connects to the network at my workplace to create the dial-up connection. Click next to continue.
4. Click Virtual Private Network connection >click next.
5. Type a descriptive name for this connection in the company name dialog box and then click next.
6. Click does not dial the initial connection if the computer is permanently connected to the Internet.

. Click anyone's use if you want to permit any user who logs on to the workstation to have access to this dial-up connection > Click my use only if you want this connection to be available only to the currently logged-on user > press next.
9. Click Finish to save the connection. Click start > click control panel and then click network connections.
10. Double-click the new connection > click properties to continue to configure options for the connection.

Use the connection

Click start > point to connect to >click the new connection.
• If you do not currently have a connection to the Internet, Windows offers to connect to the Internet.
When the connection to the Internet is made, the VPN server prompts you for your user name and password. Type your user name and password and then click Connect.
• To disconnect from the VPN, right-click the connection icon, and then click Disconnect.

 

VPN Configuration on the server side in Windows 2003 server


1. On Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Configure Your Server Wizard.
2. Click Next > o add the Remote Access/VPN Server role to your server, select that role and click the Next button to move on to the next screen in the wizard.

• Click Next. > Since the goal here is to set up a PPTP-based VPN, select the "Virtual Private Network VPN and NAT" selection and click next.
• VPN Connection, asks you to determine which network adapter is used to connect the system to the Internet. For VPN servers, you should install and use a separate network adapter for VPN applications.
• Your external VPN clients will need IP addresses that are local to the VPN server so that the clients can access the appropriate resources.
• Click the New button on the Address Range Assignment screen. Type in the starting and ending IP addresses for the new range and press OK.
• Click OK in the new address range window; your entry appears in the address range assignment window. Press next to continue.

Starts the user configuration

• Open active directory users and computers or computer management and open the properties page for a user to whom you'd like to grant access to the VPN. Select that user's Dial-In properties page. On this page, under Remote Access Permissions, select "Allow access".
