How to configure a wireless network

A Wireless network can be defined as, Networks without connecting cables, that rely on radio waves for transmission of data This article helps you, how to configure a wireless network and individual devices like Router, Client, Bridge and Repeater. This section includes very easy steps to configure a Wireless network.



How to configure a wireless network with Windows XP!


1. Go to Start > click Run > type ncpa.cpl, > click Ok.
2. In the Network Connections window > right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon > click Properties.
3. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties > click the Wireless Networks tab. If you do not see a Wireless Networks tab, your network adapter may not support the Wireless Zero Configuration service. Make sure the Wireless Zero Configuration service is started and set to automatic.
4. Under the Preferred networks > click the Add button.
5. In the Network name (SSID) box, type the name of the access point and select the appropriate settings according to your network requirements.
6. Then Click Ok
7. Under Available networks > click the View Wireless Networks button.
8. In the Wireless Network Connection dialog box, choose a network by clicking on its name > click Connect.

4 Steps to Configure a Wireless Network:

1 # First step include choose your wireless network equipment.

You must purchase these things.
1. Purchase Broadband Internet connection.
2. You should have a computer with built-in wireless networking support or a wireless network adapter.
3. Having a Wireless router
Purchase a Wireless Router
A router converts the signals coming across your Internet connection into a wireless broadcast, like a cordless phone base station. Make sure to get a wireless router, and not a wireless access point.

Purchase a Wireless Network adapter

Network adapters wirelessly connect your computer to your wireless router. If you have a new computer you may have wireless capabilities already built in, then you will not need a wireless network adapter.
If you need to purchase an adapter for your computer, buy a USB wireless network adapter.
If you have a laptop, buy a PC card-based network adapter. Make sure that you have one adapter for every computer on your network.

2 # Let’s connect your wireless router now:
First time you locate your cable modem or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off.
Connect your wireless router:
Since you'll be temporarily disconnected from the Internet, print these instructions before you go any further.
First, locate your cable modem or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off. Connect your wireless router to your modem and your modem should stay connected directly to the Internet. Your computer will wirelessly connect to your router, and the router will send communications through your modem to the Internet.

 

If you have computer connected directly to your modem:
The network cable from the back of your computer removed, and plugs it into the port labeled Internet, WAN, or WLAN on the back of your router.
If you have computer connected to a router
The network cable connected to the Internet, WAN, WLAN port from your current router and this cable plugs to Internet, then, unplug any other network cables, and plug them into the available ports on your wireless router
1. Plug in and turn on your cable or DSL modem.
2. You may wait a few minutes to give it time to connect to the Internet.
3. Plug in and turn on your wireless router.
4. Just after a minute you can see the Internet, WAN, WLAN light on your wireless router light up, that indicate it has successfully connected to your modem.
3 # Starts Configure your wireless router
1. The network cable that came with your wireless router being used,
2. Connect your computer to one of the open network ports on your wireless router ( WAN, or WLAN),
3. Now open Internet Explorer and type in the address to configure your router,
4. The address and password you use will vary depending on what type of router you have, if prompted for a password,
5. After this internet explorer will show your router's configuration page,

Most of the default settings, but you should configure three things:

1. ”SSID” as your wireless network name.
This identifies your network name. You should choose something unique that none of your neighbors will be using.
2. “WEP” or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which help protect

You will be providing a passphrase that your router uses to generate several keys. Make sure your passphrase is unique.
3: Administrative password that controls your wireless

After each configuration setting, be sure to
• Click save Settings,
• Apply,
• Or OK to save your changes.
• You should disconnect the network cable from your computer now.
4 # All the computers are connected perfectly
If you have a computer that does not having wireless network support built in, you do the following steps,
1. First you plug your network adapter into your USB port,
2. Place the antenna on top of your computer (in the case of a desktop computer),
3. Windows will automatically detect the new adapter,
4. Prompt you to insert the CD that came with your adapter.
5. The on-screen instructions will guide you through the configuration process.
6. Then a notification that says it has found a wireless network.

How to configure hardware in wireless networking,Access point configurations: (AP)
Client. In regular Wireless card that usually goes on a computer. Under such configuration The AP can only communicate with Wireless Cable/DSL Router or an AP configured as a Gateway.


Bridge. In such Configuration the AP can only communicate with another AP that is configured as a Bridge. Plug one AP Bridge to a Switch on the first LAN, the other AP to a Switch on the second LAN, and they are connected.


Gateway:
In this mode the hardware acts as a Wireless Hub connecting to Wireless Clients that are installed on network computers (Wireless PCMCIA, Wireless USB, Wireless PCI, etc.).


Repeater. It acts like a client to receive a signal a Wireless source and then switches to AP mode to broadcasts to regular clients. Such a configuration can be used to extend the range of a Wireless LAN.
