How to troubleshoot a printer

This article describes some general troubleshooting steps that applicable most of the printers like HP LaserJet printer, Lexmark Laser printer etc. These simple set of procedures help you to solve printer hardware and printout problems as well as some errors that may occur in printing.   

                     Printer errors and their solutions

After paper jam or paper out, printer does not resume
Solution. 

 A listing restarts from the beginning:

  • Disable command.
  • Take printer offline.
  • Reload paper or clear jam.
  • Put the printer online.
  • Enable command.

A listing restarts from the stopping point:

  • Offline the  printer.
  • Reload paper  or jam clear.
  • Put the printer online.
  • If printing does not resume.
  • Enable command.

If printer does not printing 
Following these steps:

  •  Make sure printer is enabled.
  •  Printer getting accepting requests.
  • The scheduler is running.
  • Device file is correct.
  • For example, specify > lpstat –t.

Check the printer hardware

  • Make  sure  your printer has paper  available, and that it is not Jamming the printer.
  • Verify that your printer is online, if your printer has an online-offline setting or button.
  • Make sure that your printer is connected to a working power source.
  • Restart your printer by turning it off and then turning it back on after 5 to 10 seconds.
  • If your printer documentation includes any troubleshooting information, perform those troubleshooting steps.
  • Perform a self-test on the printer if possible.

These simple techniques that will solve many common printer problems.

  • You first restart your computer.
  • If printer is not printing,  change your default printer:
    • Start
    • Settings 
    • Printers/Faxes.
    • Right-click the printer you want,
    • Then select (left-click) Set as Default.                        
  • Make sure all connections going to and coming from the printer are firmly in place.
  • Check that the printer is on-line:
  • Start
  • Settings
  • Printers
  • Right-click the printer
  • Turn off your printer for 10 seconds
  • You may wish to re-install your printer.

Uninstall a printer
              
Step  1.

  • Start
  • Settings
  • Printers/faxes,
  • Right-click the Printer

  Step 2.

  • Select (left-click) Delete.
  • Yes to delete related files.
  • If asked.

A test page is Printing

  • Start > Settings > Printer.
  • Right-click the printer name.
  • Left-click Properties.
  • Click on the Print Test Page button.

Find the network name

  • Start > Settings > Printer.
  • Right-click the printer name.
  • Left-click Properties.
  • The name is displayed next to the picture of the printer.

 Network printer installation problem

These steps provide you the solution of network printer installation.
Solution.
 Select manufacturer and then model from the available lists.

  1.  Start > Settings > Printers/faxes.
  2.  Add a Printer > Next.
  3.  Local printer, but uncheck Auto-detect box.
  4.  Click Create a new port, and pick TCP/IP from drop-down list > then Next.
  5.  Type in printer name or IP address, Next, Finish.
  6.  You can either keep the suggested printer name or put in something that makes . sense to you. Click Next twice.
  7.  It’s suggested that you print a test page.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Then Finish.

Printout problems in a printer.
Reason.  The printers stop printing and users are waiting for printouts or Someone prints  multiple jobs but only one prints out and the person is charged for all jobs.
Solution. 
                 Following these steps you can solve printout problems.

  • Verify or check the printer in Pharos to see if a document is “stuck in the printer”.  If this is the case, the document is usually a PDF file.
  • Delete the document at the top of the list.  After this is done, then the printers usually start printing again.

If HP Laserjet printer is jammed
Solution.  Sometimes the HP printer shows that there is a paper jam; reset the printer using the keys on the front panel.
You must stop the printer from beeping by pressing any key on the panel.
·   You first check jam indicator for jams.
·    Now Open Auto Eject door first.
·    Check the stacker area. 

  • To open lift tab on gate and check for jams.

·    Check the print area.

  • Open the side panel.
  • Remove the toner cartridge and pull out the module.
  • Open paper guide by pulling handle downward.
  • Check feed and pull out jammed paper.

 

Check the fuser unit area of printer.

  • Open front cover
  • Remove any hand jewelry
  • Pull out paper feed module. 
  • Remove fuser unit by rotating blue handle upward. 
  • Lift out fuser unit assembly and put in paper box lid in safe location

Open the unit

  • Carefully remove paper                                      

            ·    Push tabs inward and let cover drop down
            ·    Push back up to close

 Reinstall the unit

            ·    Make sure  that it is down completely
·    Close and lock in place

If there are no more jams shows on the front pannal, press start button.

 

This technical support is very helpful for printer troubleshooting.
