RAID Troubleshooting

A RAID system is a collection of hard drives joined together using a RAID level definition. In level 0 RAID can be used to stripe drives together to give more overall access speed. In level 1 RAID can be used  mirror drives. In level 5 RAID can be used to increase uptime of your overall storage by striping drives together and then keeping parity data, if a drive should fail the system keeps operating (level 5). This article described the solution of some common errors and problems in raid. A raid user can now easily troubleshoot these problems by following these steps that described in this article.

Common errors and their solution in RAID

 Problems in SATA drives
Cause. This problem is due to the BIOS incompatibilities or faulty cabling.
Solution.
When you install SATA drives, make sure that the system has the latest version of its BIOS with SATA support.
Make sure the connectors are properly plugged. SATA uses a cable to connect each individual drive to the controller. There is no master-slave relationship, as there is with IDE, and thus no need to set jumpers or terminators when installing an SATA drive. In fact, some SATA drives have jumper blocks or terminators near the interface connector. They already set in factory mode and should not be changed.
Recovery error when using RAID.
If you have RAID 1, power lost but disk was active.
Solution.
You can solve this problem by using Raid tools. Raid arrays can be checked with ckraid /etc/raid1.confCalling ckraid /etc/raid1.conf --fix will pick one of the disks in the arrayed use that as the master copy, and copy its blocks to the others in the mirror
To designate which of the disks should be used as the master, you can use the --force-source flag. When you are comfortable with the proposed changes, supply the --fix option.

If you have raid 1, you lost power but there was disk activity.
Solution.
You can recover this problem by running this command.
 mkraid raid1.conf -f --only-super block
If you have a RAID-4 or a RAID-5 setup and you lost power while there was disk activity still.
Solution.
You cannot use fsck to do preliminary checking, first you use ckraid.
The ckraid command can be safely run without the --fix option to verify the inactive Raid array without making any changes. When you are comfortable with the proposed changes, supply the --fix option.
