How to Troubleshoot VOIP Problems

VOIP has become very popular in recent times. It allows you to talk on the phone using the Internet at cheaper rates. Like every technology, VoIP has also its peculiar technical problems. This article provides the solution of these common problems. A network administrator or a VoIP user can easily troubleshoot these problems by following these steps that describes in this article.

                      Common problems and their solutions

Problem:  VOIP security problems
Solution:  To solve the security problem you must follow these steps:

  1. VoIP are used on regular IP data networks. Denial of Service (DOS) attacks create access Viruses, worms and malware can cause trouble for voip users, just as they do on IP data networks.
  2. While unauthorized access to administrative tools and toll fraud are real problems in VoIP.
  3. Use Firewalls to block unauthorized access to IP phones.

  5. If networks are divided into separate security zones for data and voice, allowing tailored security solutions for each zone.

Problem: IF you do not have dial tone by using VOIP
Solution: To solve the dial tone problem you follow these steps:

  • Keep your voip internet phone adapter well ventilated so it doesn’t overheat and make sure it’s positioned at least 3 feet away from any electronic device that might cause interference.
  • Reboot your adapter, modem and computer. 
  • If you’re using multiple routers or other networking equipment, try plugging your voip adapter directly into the broadband modem. If this solves the sound issue, you might have a problem with one of your other pieces of equipment. Gradually add the equipment back into your setup until you’ve identified the one that’s causing the problem.

 

Problem: How you can reboot your Phone Adapter?
Solution:  Please follow these steps to reboot your phone adapter:

  1. In the first step, you unplug the power cable from the VoIP phone adapter.
  2. Then Wait approximately 2 to  3 minutes.
  3. Plug the power cable into the VoIP phone adapter again.

Problem: When your calls are going directly to voicemail
Solution:  To correct this problem following these steps:

  • Make sure that your “Do Not Disturb” feature is not active.
  •  Make sure that your phone is plugged into the phone adapter’s phone 1 port.
  • Check that your phone adapter is powered on and the phone 1 light is on.
  • If you are using multiple routers and other networking equipment, try plugging your Phone Adapter directly into the Internet modem. If this resolves your issue, you may have to troubleshoot your other devices.
  • If you have done configuration correctly then reboot the phone adapter.
  • If this still does not solve your problem, please reboot your cable modem and phone adapter.

Problem: When I dial out and hear fine, but no one can hear me.
Solution:  For the correction of this problem you should follow these steps:

To solve this problem you check to see that you are not utilizing any “bandwidth hogs” on your network. Or other types of activities where you may be using your bandwidth to send large files.
If your phone quality returns not to normal, please following these steps:

  • Make sure that your phone adapter (router) is in a well suited area and has not overheated.
  • If you are using multiple routers and other networking equipment, try plugging your phone Adapter directly into the Internet modem.
  • Reboot your Phone Adapter (router).
  • If that fails, reboot your phone adapter (router), modem, and computer(s).

Problem: Noise problem in VOIP
Reason: One common cause of noise is signal level being too low at some point on the voice path, when the signal is amplified then the noise is also amplified. Some equipment problems and bad electrical connections can also lead to excessive noise in VOIP.
Solution:

  1. Try to solve the noise problems with specific routes or pieces of equipment (including telephone handsets).
  2. Check the loss plan when problem appears to be associated with a specific route that connects to an analog or TDM trunk.
  3. Check for excessive jitter or packet loss when the problem seems to occur on a specific packet path.

Problem: VOIP networking Problems
Solution:  You must follow these steps one by one to solve the network problems in VoIP.

  1. Check that your VoIP setup and installation is ok.
  2. Make sure that your adapter and router are working properly.
  3. Check all the cables that connect to your VoIP network. When cables are loose and unsecured become cause of many problems.
